Working on a board

Moving around, adding and arranging cards, the islands at the canvas edges, and an undo that only ever takes back your own work.

Both hands

Everything an agent composes onto a board, you can create and edit in place, and an agent can rework what you drew. Agents send whole batches that the server places (composing boards); you work with the pointer. Both land on the same board, in the same history, live for everyone looking at it.

  • Pan and zoom — the scroll wheel zooms at the cursor (a preference turns it into panning, and ⌘-wheel zooms then); Space-drag or the middle mouse button pans; a trackpad pinches. Zoom goes up to 1000%. ⇧1 fits the whole board, ⌘0 returns to 100%, and the zoom percentage in the toolbar does both — a click fits, a double-click resets.
  • The section rail — a column of ticks on the canvas' left edge, one per section in reading order, the one in view lit. Hover it to read every label at once, click one to fly there; a journey walked several times keeps one tick with its passes fanned out beside it, and ▶ at the end presents the sections one after another.
  • Find — ⌘F searches the board itself: card text and the text read from screenshots.
  • Open a card — double-click. An image or PDF expands to the centre; a document or artifact grows to fill the view where it sits, and Esc closes it. A text, note, page, table, chart or diagram opens for editing instead. The selection bar's open puts a document on its own page — documents.

Adding things

The + in the toolbar opens the element gallery: pick a kind, then click where it goes (Esc cancels). Every kind arrives with a starter, so you are typing straight away.

TierKinds
EverydayNote, text, section, page, shape
StructureChecklist, journey steps, cluster, callout, compare
DataTable, chart, diagram, lo-fi mockup, doc
EmbedUpload, link

Faster paths to the same kinds:

  • Double-click empty canvas — a ghost composer at that spot: type a note, paste a link or an image, or / for any element.
  • ⌘-click (a long press on touch) — the radial ring. On empty canvas it creates at the cursor and arms the pencil or the connector; on a card it offers that card's actions. Flick toward a bubble and release, or click one.
  • Paste or drop — a pasted link becomes a website card, pasted HTML a live artifact and any other text a note; pasted or dropped files become cards.
  • Tools — V moves and selects, P draws ink, A annotates a region, N drops a sticky note, C connects two cards, S draws a section.

Arranging

  • Selecting — a click selects; only Esc or a click on empty canvas deselects. A drag on empty canvas draws a marquee (or pans, per preference); ⇧ adds to the selection; ⌘A selects everything, or only the journey you are in.
  • Dragging — a dragged card pushes colliding neighbours aside and they spring back when you move on; the toolbar toggle turns that off. ⇧-drag snaps to the dot grid, arrow keys nudge.
  • Sections — frames that hold cards. S draws one, ⌘G groups the selection into one and ⌘⇧G ungroups. A section can keep an auto-layout from layout in its selection bar; then dropping a card inside it reorders instead of placing, with a live preview of where it will land, and the server re-lays the frame as cards arrive.
  • Tidying — ⇥ tidies a selection of two or more cards into rows, untangle pulls overlapping cards apart, and arrange in the toolbar lays out the whole board or the selection — or has Eve organize loose cards into themed sections.
  • The board theme — a visual mood for this board's canvas and cards (house, light paper, dark paper, playful, technical, diary, girlies, sketch, release), picked from the toolbar and separate from your app theme; exports of a sketch board stay sketched.
  • The selection bar — selecting a card puts a bar above it with only what that kind supports: edit (✎, or ⌘E), annotate a region, wire to another card, group into a frame, tidy and align, a note's colour, favorite, export a diagram as SVG or PNG, duplicate, delete.
  • The board head — share, copy link, open in a new tab, download, tags and file a task, as many as fit; the rest wait under ⋯.
  • Right-click a card — favorite it for you, or file a task from it: the task goes through intake and, once accepted, its card lands beside this one.
  • Versions — hold ⌥ to reveal element ids; ⌥-click a card fans out its versions; ⌥⇧-drag scrubs the whole board back through its history.

The islands

The board's own chrome floats as islands at the canvas edges. Each opens in place, and its pill — now a × — closes it again.

IslandWhereWhat it holds
⌖ AnnotationsRight edgeEvery annotation in board order, filtered by author (you · people · claude · eve). ← → walk the list and ↵ opens a thread in place; ✦ run review asks Eve for more. Your staged annotations wait at the foot until Send to claude — annotating.
≋ Chat (⌘J)Bottom rightThe board's conversation with everyone on it, with an eve channel when the workspace's AI is on; the pill carries the unread count.
≡ Activity (⌘⇧A)Bottom rightThe board's history, filtered All · Mine · Removals: step back to one of your own changes, revert another actor's latest batch, restore a removed card.
PeopleTop rightWho is on the board now, you first; rename yourself from your own row.

When an agent asks you something, its questions open beside the board as one-click answers — questions. A brainstorm board opens in its own studio instead — brainstorming.

Undo is yours

⌘Z takes back your own last gesture — a drag, a paste or a layout switch counts as one — and ⌘⇧Z redoes it. It never reverts an agent's batch, and an agent's undo never reaches yours. To take back what an agent composed, open Activity and revert its latest batch there; a card anyone removed comes back with restore. Undo lives on the server, so every step shows for everyone on the board at once.

Reading a journey board

A journey board is what a recorded session or a pushed set of screenshots leaves behind: screens wired in the order somebody walked them, each wire leaving from the element that was clicked, a branch drawn as a signpost. Every pass of a journey is its own section, folded into one tick on the section rail — sessions.
